Van Long nature reserve - Ninh Binh

Van Long nature reserve (Van Long means Cloud Dragon in Vietnamese) is located in the northeast of Gia Vien District, Ninh Binh province. It is largest natural reserve in the north of Vietnam. The prize awarded by Vietnam red book rewards for its beauty and great natural wealth of this exceptional place.

Van Long has not always been a submerged region. It became so because of the construction in 1960. A 30km dyke on the left side of Day River was built.  The marsh now is over extent over 3500ha and has become a favorite stop in the winter immigration of many birds. In addition, for the ornithological richness, the reserve also has a great diversity in its fauna and flora.
There are some rare animals such as endanger Delacour’s Langurs, varanus salvator, chamois, lizards… Among the plants, there are a lot of special plants such as Dalbergia cochinchinensis, Strychnos nux-vomica, Melientha suavis, Chukrasia tabularis, Drynaria fortune. They are all listed in Vietnam Red Book. There are also a large number of insects threatened with extinction such as the Belostomatid which lives in a perfectly pure environment.

Named also “Bay without wave”, Van Long looks like a magnificent giant mirror on which the visitor could contemplate from the rowing boat in the restful beauty of this on the clear water which we could see the bottom. In addition, Van Long also is home to thirty caves, the best known are Ca (fish), Rua (tortures) and Chanh (Lemon) cave.
